Top Gear Start Again In India

The Christmas Top Gear special normally starts a new series and the 28th Dec saw an eagerly awaited road trip across India, hopefully with all the tension and humour of previous events. But within 20 minutes or so, there was sufficient evidence that this episode would not be to the standard of previous road trips.

First of all, the 3 presenters turned up with what appeared to be, pretty good cars, an immaculate mini, a Rolls Royce and a Jaguar XJS, at least 2 of these probably deserved to not be inflicted with the normal Top Gear punishment and kept in the way they had been up to now.

Instead of leaving their starting point of Bombay to head into the chaotic roads of India, they decided to first do a challenge within Bombay of delivering meals to compete with the locals. So the road trip, became nothing more than, how to try and make people laugh. The only glint came from “Hamster”, when he turned quickly on his Mini to see tins of food fly off his roof. Except the quick turn appeared to to be staged very badly as the road was empty except for him, something that you would not see in India. We then se James May drive out of Bombay in his Rolls Royce, pretending he was lost. “Jezza” got there on time but with only a few meals and of course a lot of spills.

So now we are ready for the road story that will see them tackle 1000s of miles of open road!! Well no! They went on a train, with the cars in the back, and decided to pretend to entertain the passengers on the train, with drums double bass and keyboard. Amazing how that double bass just appeared.

Now comes the part where they dress the train in Banners marketing the British exports and James misses the train. We see him miss the train at one end, then appear with his rug sack at the next end, mmm, how did he get that?

The decoration of the train goes bad when the exact train cars with the banners separate, leaving half banners that say funny things; never seen that before!

Now the cars are back on the road and its time for a staged hill climb. Jeremy now has his crash helmet with him (where do that come from)? Nothing more to say about this part.

With 30 minutes to go on this 1 and 1/2 hour special, the guys head off in their cars towards China, at last we see what we wanted to see an hour ago. Dangerous roads, mad driving and of course the cars all get some customisation. Then we see some amazing scenery as the rough roads come to play. At last some good Top Gear stuff.

I can excuse the cricket match with the locals, it did seem appropriate compared with the earlier farce. Then the 3 cars are left on pedestals where they ended to celebrate British car making.

We know that Top Gear specials are scripted and we know that most things are staged, but this episode was just too unreal, and the apparent mishaps, like driving a mini digger into the Rolls or blowing up a room with a big firework just looked stupid rather than funny.

It was if this episode had no script at all, and something needed to fill the 90 mins, so it was made up as they went with sketches that would have been rejected by just about everyone else.

If the guys had just driven out of Bombay with their cars , more would have happened, it would have been funnier and more entertaining and a real adventure, not the disappointment of 2011. Lets hope the new series is better.

Staying With Salvage Finder

So you have found the right salvage project what next? Well really most if not all of the preparation for the salvage project should have been done before the purchase of the vehicle, getting prices for car parts for instance from a from a finder service like carsparefinder or similar. But we know that when the time comes to actually buy the parts, prices may have changed, so when you research your vehicle form say salvage spare finder a (co part dealer), try to get your details as early as possible to the auction sale, as things and availability will change.

Don’t forget that the vehicle will need be off the road and probably “sworn”, if it is needing a good restoration, and in the UK you also have to inform the government if your vehicles is not insured and is on private ground or in a garage somewhere.

The key point to fixing a salvage car is time, as every week it takes to repair that vehicle loses value, that will affect the resale value, or just make you wish you had waited until prices dropped before buying a good usable vehicle.

What Is Repairing Salvage All About

The art of taking a car that has been written off by the insurance companies (deemed as uneconomical to repair) then putting time and money to prove the insurance companies wrong. We say art deliberately as you should not assume that all salvage projects can be repaired cheaper than just saving up and buying that car from a normal auction yard.

The first thing you need to know is not everyone who buys salvage wants to repair the car. So supposing you are buying a vehicle though a broker like SalvageSpareFinder, you may find yourself bidding against a breaker yard who sees more value in the car as parts than as a working vehicle.

So you should cost all your parts first, then add on a bit more, then take into account your time and labour, research how much the vehicle is worth when repaired and only then set a price as a limit, before entering any salvage auction.

If you do the work, you can end up with something that will turn a profit or save money, do it wrong and you could find a large bill and nothing more than a scrap car.

Figures Released Show True Damage To Japanese Automotive Sector

Figures released today have shown the true extent that Japan’s automotive has suffered at the hands of the earthquake and nuclear disasters in March.

Experts have said they believe that the closure of plants and difficulty in both importing and exporting required parts lead to the industries production levels dropping by over 60% when compared to previous years.

Broken down into individual manufacturers it was found that Honda reported a 52.9% on-year drop in worldwide production and an 81.0 percent slump in domestic output. With Toyota, the world’s biggest auto maker saying they were down 48.1%.

Statistics however were less gloomy for Nissan, which despite global decreasing 22.4 percent on-year announced a 4.4 percent rise in worldwide sales, marking an all-time record for the month of April.

But overall the effect the disaster had on the automotive industry has reflected in the countries overall economy and briefly threatened its place as the third largest economy in the world.

Working alongside vehicle manufacturer, the country has 800 major auto parts manufacturers. Who are responsible for supplying interior equipment and parts such as air conditioners, plus some 4,000 subcontractors and 20,000 sub-subcontractors.

In response to the disaster, the Japanese Government set up a 50 Billion Yen (£400million) relief fund to help see automotive manufacturers through the following financial crisis.

Under the plan, the bank will offer the investment to the Japan Auto Parts Industries Association, which will then provide cash for its member firms as well as their subcontractors.

The Importance Of Using Original Classic Car Parts

Classic vehicles are becoming a popular hobby around the world, from the UK to India people are spending both time and money in huge amounts to restore or repair their vintage motors.

From an Austin Allegro to a Lotus Elan the market and desire for classic car parts can make it difficult to find the parts needed for repairs or tune ups. Some manufacturers are starting to reproduce their vehicles, an example being the iconic VW Campervan making spares a little bit easier to come by, this however is definitely not the norm.

Using traditional and original parts might seem like nostalgia gone mad but it’s actually crucial to the running and balance of the vehicle. The best way to restore a car is to strip the vehicle completely and rebuild it from the bottom up as even the slightest modification can spoil the cars look.

However it’s not just restoration fanatics that need to find classic car parts. The increasing cost of running a new vehicle has meant that a lot of people have kept their classics on the road. Making parts a necessity not just a hobby.

Traditionally you would have to trawl through scrap and vehicle dismantlers yards to find parts, however the development of the internet has opened up a whole new market for classic car parts. Owners can now simply request the part they need and dealers up and down the country will quote and send the part without you having to leave your home.

What Is Line Boring?

Pivot wear in machinery can be a time consuming and regular problem in the ground engaging industry, traditionally to increase the diameter of a bore you would need to use expensive line boring machines that can be quick and easy, at a price.

Repairing a hole in a lug is just that. Wear and tear is an everyday part of the industry and repaired holes can soon become oval, effecting both the efficiency and more importantly the safety and stability of a machine.

New technology has been developed that allows this problem to be prevented or solved permanently. This is excellent news for anyone with equipment on construction machinery or offshore oil drilling.

Up until now expensive portable line boring machines were the most efficient industry device, which despite being more productive then their predecessors still required set up and dismantling time, disrupting productivity.

Using a tapered axel, expansion sleeves and pressure washers with a fastening element eliminates the movement in the pivot lugs. This in turn means no stress or pressure on the holes resulting in no wear on the holes and no need for expensive, time consuming and temporary line boring processes.

The way these systems have been designed allows for complete adaptability so they can be custom made for use in anything from construction machinery to safety bolts on high speed transport such as planes and trains.

BMW Profits Quadruple

German manufacturers BMW have revealed they expect profits to quadruple across world wide markets.

One of the reasons behind the prediction has been the popularity of the vehicle brand in China, the US and Europe. Sales in China for the first quarter are up a massive 71.6% with sales in North America and Europe up around 15-20%.

The announcement comes as Mercedes and Volvo both confirmed profits in western markets, giving hope that the recession might be over for the automotive sector.

The luxury market also seems to be recovering better than any other with Audi owners Volkswagen reporting that their profits have tripled in the recovering European market, in a quarter that is usually not seen as very profitable.

Car industry analyst Schuldt said: “So far, all the companies have reported quite good figures.

“China continues to play an important role, especially for the premium manufacturers because it is so profitable.”

The US however still remain BMW’s biggest market, selling 65,000 vehicles since January 2011 although China is catching up with 58,700 sales for the same period.

Experts have said they think one of the reasons behind the sustainability of brands such as BMW and Mercedes lies in mix of models available from luxury saloons to SUV’s there’s is something for everyone.

The Ultimate Driving Experience

Pretty much every day around the UK, drivers looking for excitement and speed are taking part in super car driving experiences to sample something they cannot afford. We are talking about Ferraris, Porsches, Aston Martins and lets not forget those rally cars and things that may go a bit slower like off road experiences.

They may seem a bit expensive at first, bearing in mind you will probably spend more time talking about what you are going to do longer than the actual driving experience. But when you take into account the cost of tyres, sometime £1000 each and the parts and servicing, it is no wonder racing track days are not cheap.

But speak to those who have just completed an experience and you will get a different picture, mainly it was worth every penny as you cannot appreciate the shear power of these vehicles until you actually drive one. So for now, even in a recession, these racing track day experiences are likely to high on the gift list.

Beware Alicante Airport Has Moved

This is not something that happens very often in a lifetime, but 13 days ago as we were driving our Alicante airport car hire vehicle back to the airport at 4.30 in the morning, we drove up the ramp to the roof of the airport’s car park. We knew their was something wrong as soon as we entered the car park as it was just too empty.

But when we pulled up in front of what was the car hire office to see it no longer exists, took us by surprise. We had picked the car up at a different airport and was not told there had been changes, so in the darkness of the early morning we had to find solutions and catch a plane back to the UK.

With only 90 minutes to catch the flight their seemed little to do, but go to the airport terminal and hand the key into the information desk and ask why the car park was not being used anymore and would hand the key back to the car hire company. That may have been a good idea, had we not then discovered that the Alicante airport terminal no longer existed, as it was just closed.

We could see the new terminal in the distance and knew it was being built, but no one had said it was replacing the old, we assumed it would become terminal 2. To cut a long story short, we caught the plane, handed the car keys in and in the end the car hire office had not been moved that far away anyway and if it had been, we probably would have seem it. We catch the same flight in 7 days, this time we are more prepared.

It’s not just about vehicles

OK we have started another one of those news sites that state they will write about a certain subject, so it for a few days and then stop. We are no perfect and this site is not just about vehicles, but right from the start we want you all to know, the post will be just now and again and not like the starts coming out every night.

Today was the royal wedding of William and Kate and with the exception of those awful mini busses than transported the junior royal family, there were some statements out there over which make of vehicles are in fashion with the royals. It seems Jaguar came out tops, with Rolls Royce doing the important stuff, probably only because they had the glass fitted so everyone could see Kate. Its a real shame that none of these British marques are actually owned by the British anymore, even though it seemed correct to use these vehicles. We saw loads of Range Rovers also, probably used by the security, again another make sold off to foreigners.

Anyway the first day of our news site, was born on the day Kate and William became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, good luck to them and us.
